New York Women’s Music Collection

New York: various publishers, 1970s-1980s. 27 flyers and pamphlets. Offset and mimeograph. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 — 8 1/2 x 11 in. Some wear and toning with chips to a few items; overall very good. Item #10290

A significant gathering of 27 items from the New York women’s music community of the 1970s and ‘80s.

Comprised of flyers and pamphlets from the late-1970s and early-1980s, the collection includes promotional materials for concerts by Meg Christian, Mart Watkins, Gwen Avery, Therese Edell, Margie Adam, Cris Williamson, Alix Dobkin, Julie Homi, Susan Savell, Sun Paz, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Casselberry DuPrée, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Willie Tyson, and many more.

The collection underscores the grassroots orientation of women’s music; many of the concerts promoted by these flyers were benefits for sundry women’s organizations and political struggles, emphasizing the intimate connection between the feminist cultural and political movements of the 1970s and 1980s. The collection also maps the alternative cultural geography of New York in the period; many of the events are on campuses, at Greenwich Village cafes, and alternative art and performance spaces.

A substantial record of queer and feminist music performances in the 1970s.
