An extensive annotated bibliography of Black lesbian writing, with an introduction by the Black socialist and lesbian feminist scholar, activist, critic, and publisher, Barbara Smith.
The work covers six primary areas of study: “Lives and Lifestyles,” “Oppression, Resistance, and Liberation,” “Literature and Criticism,” “Music and Musicians,” “Periodicals,” and “Research, Reference, and Popular Studies.” Within each category, Roberts lists a wealth of books, magazine articles, recordings, and other corresponding materials. The book may be credited with introducing such Black women writers as Becky Birtha, SDiane Bogus, Anita Cornwell, and Pat Parker to many readers for the first time. These and other more obscure figures’ contributions to Black lesbian intellectual, literary, political, and cultural production were carefully and thoughtfully recorded by Roberts’ rigorous scholarship.
