Gay Candlelight Walk and Community Meal
New York: Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, 1971. Mimeograph. 8 1/2 x 11 in. Small closed tear to left edge; else near fine. Item #10319
Flyer for a Chrismas Eve gay candlelight walk and community meal, organized by the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee.
The Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee formed in 1970 to plan a commemorative event for the anniversary of the Stonewall riots; the result of these efforts was the first gay pride march. On this flyer, the organization mentions that they will be accepting donations towards the 1972 march.
This flyer evidences the Committee planning events beyond the annual march and working to connect gay people with their chosen families during an often difficult and isolating time of year for queer people. Also of note is the connection with the Village Presbyterian Church, demonstrating both the radical inclinations of some downtown churches and how an early gay liberation organization established connections with other civic organizations in the neighborhood.
We are unable to locate any other records of this event just two years after the Stonewall uprising.
