Silkwood Books [Rochester feminist bookstore flyer]
Rochester, New York: Silkwood, [1980s]. Offset. 8 ½ x 11 in. Very good. Item #10325
Flyer for the feminist bookstore at 633 Monroe Avenue in Rochester, New York, opened on October 31, 1982. Named for Karen Silkwood, the chemical technician, union activist, and whistleblower who died in a car crash that may have involved foul play, the store is celebrated locally as an important site in the lesbian and feminist subcultures of Western New York in the 1980s and 90s. Only a few months after the opening of Silkwood, the area became the center of the feminist anti-war and anti-nuclear movement with the deployment of the Women’s Encampment for Peace at Seneca Falls, less than an hour east of Rochester. The store closed in 2000 after nearly two decades as a hub of the Western New York feminist and queer community.
