Gay Women Dance at Earl Hall, Columbia University

New York: Gay Women at CCNY & Columbia, 1972. Mimeograph flyer. 8 ½ x 11 in. Horizontal line from folding; offprint traces of stencil to verso. Item #10328

Flyer for an early lesbian dance at Columbia University’s Earl Hall on Friday February 18, 1972.

Earl Hall was a major center of queer student organizing beginning in 1966 with the founding of the Student Homophile League, the first gay student organization in the country. In 1970, the League became the more politically-minded Gay People at Columbia, dedicated to presenting “as complete a view as possible of the contemporary gay experience: socially, educationally and politically.” Gay People at Columbia was well-known for their Friday night dances at Earl Hall through the 1970s; though we cannot locate any record of “Gay Women at CCNY & Columbia,” the location and time suggest that the group was likely an early lesbian contingent of GPC.

Scarce record of early lesbian student organizing.
