Our Mothers’ Mothers: Canadian Sisterhood’s Family Album

Ontario: privately printed, 1972. Offset. [88] pp. String bound with brown string. 11 x 14 in. Quarter ring of discoloration to front cover and slight bumping to top right corner; else near fine. Item #10337

A large privately printed photobook compiling photographs, quotations, and brief biographical sketches of Canadian girls and women from a variety of class and racial backgrounds in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

The writer and research Carol Pasternak collected the 113 images from 13 archives across Canada in an effort to create a wide ranging photographic record of Canadian women’s history. Pasternak worked on The Women’s Kit Project at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, an initiative to locate and compile materials for feminist curriculum development. Pasternak created the book as a gift for her coworkers Becky Kane and Margot Smith; she likely gathered the materials for the book while on a research trip with Smith for the book Pioneer Women of Western Canada, published by The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in 1978, the same year as Our Mothers’ Mothers.

A seemingly undocumented and unrecorded hand-bound photobook created in the spirit of the intellectual project of forging and recuperating women’s history.
