Self-published essay by Margaret Oaks about life in the Twin Oaks intentional community, providing her experience as a lesbian on a primarily heterosexual commune in Virginia.
The commune, which still exists today, was founded in 1967—it is one of the longest running secular communes in the United States. The community is committed to sustainable ecological practices, income-sharing, non-violence, and egalitarianism.
Not separately cataloged on OCLC as of October 2024. We find record of an essay published in Communities, #45, Oct. - Nov. 1980. Margaret Oaks, “Community Living: One Woman’s Choice,” but have not been able to locate other references to Margaret Oaks or her writing. A rare lesbian perspective on the broader back-to-the-land communal movement of the 1970s.
