Flyer promoting the Women’s Center Karate Club, founded by Susan Ribner.

The Karate Club was founded in 1975 and based out of the Women’s Center at the Firehouse on 20th Street; the club was an important part of the feminist self-defense movement in New York and persisted for decades following the movement’s apogee, closing in 2014 following Ribner’s death. Ribner, who is identified as an instructor on this flyer, also founded the Women’s Martial Arts Union a few years before the Karate Club; she was a driving force in the feminist self-defense movement throughout the 1970s and ‘80s.
