Towards Bethlehem

Berkeley: John Fante and Grover Wickersham, design and publishing, 1969. Very good. Item #10420

Self-published photo book documenting the police brutality at the 1969 Third World Liberation Front (TWLF) strike at UC Berkeley, designed and published by Grover Wickersham and John Fante.

This book documents the brutality unleashed at protestors by both civilian vigilantes and police in 1969. Featuring photography from Grover Wickersham, John Fante, Pat Crowley, Art Pierson, Gordon Davis, and David Lawrence, it also includes a poem by Marylouise Oates, one-time activist who would later become a friend of the Clintons and a society writer at the LATimes.

The strike at Berkeley followed a strike the month prior at San Francisco State University, also organized by the TWLF. These strikes were pivotal moments in the fight for inclusive education, and the establishment of Ethnic Studies, demanding a curriculum that reflected the histories and cultures of the school’s marginalized constituencies.
