A Calendar of Events for Lesbians and Gay People Compiled by Gay Media Alliance, No. 1

Brooklyn: Gay Media Alliance, 1979. Stapled at top left corner. 14 x 8 1/2 in. Very good, with lines from folding into halves, and a few spots of light discoloration. Item #10424

The first and likely only issue of a queer calendar of events for lesbian and gay people compiled by the Gay Media Alliance, featuring gatherings of support groups, gay rights organizations, queer friendly churches, addiction recovery programs, sport groups, orchestras, rap groups, radio stations, theaters, and, notably, the early Black and Latine lesbian group, Salsa SoulSisters, as well as the Gay Teachers Association, Lesbian Feminist Liberation, and others.

The Gay Media Alliance was a short-lived organization which included Marc Rubin, Fred Goldhaber, and other members of the Gay Activists Alliance, as well as researcher and activist Bruce Voeller, credited with coining the term acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Active from 1979 through the early 1980s, it was a direct precursor to GLAAD, which was founded in 1985 and is now the largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization. Little record of the Gay Media Alliance exists OCLC locates two examples of this calendar as of September 2025, and no other holdings related to the GMA.

A superb record of an underexamined early queer organization, and of the queer events happening in New York in December 1979.

Price: $250.00
