AIDS In Prison: A Forum for Education and Action [anti-carceral struggle, health activism, gay rights]
Chicago: ACT-UP Chicago, VIDA/SIDA, and Committee to End the Marion Lockdown, 1988. Offset. 11 x 8 1/2 in. Very good. Item #10436
Flyer promoting a forum for education and action concerning AIDS in prison, sponsored by ACTUP along with prison organizers--a landmark but under examined event in contemporary American activism, as the struggle against prisons intersected with the struggle for gay rights and health, establishing allegiances in struggle that became foundational for the contemporary left.
This event was a result of a remarkable collaboration between the Committee to End the MarionLockdown (CEML), an organization fighting against control unit prisons and related inhumane practices at the notorious federal prison in Marion, Illinois, and two of the major AIDS activist organizations in Chicago. CEML anti-carceral work's led to nation-wide influence, as the practices at Marion became widespread in many other prisons in the U.S. and internationally. Co-founder of the committee Nancy Kurshan wrote a history of the group in the book "Out Of Control: A Fifteen Year Battle Against Control Unit Prisons," where she also details the organization of this forum.
