Hot Peaches Are... Damned

The flier for an unknown, perhaps undocumented performance by the Hot Peaches, likely in 1978.

We can locate no records of a Peaches show called “Damned” nor is it mentioned in Jimmy Camicia’s memoir focused on the Peaches, My Dear, Sweet Self: A Hot Peach Life. That being said, this flier notes venue described as “Peaches”, with an address on Christopher Street; Camicia rented a space just for the Peaches and organized a series of performances at 115 Christopher Street from Summer 1978 to Spring 1979 - the only performances on Christopher Street recorded, besides an outdoor performance in 1974. Though there are several performances from the Christopher Street Loft among Camicia’s list of Hot Peaches performances in the book, they are not discussed in detail - we know of another one-day performance the next week, Saturday September 30, and another one-off performance in November of that year, entitled “Murder in the Vatican.” Therefore, we believe this flier to be an unrecorded performance from this period, or an earlier, in-process staging of “Murder in the Vatican,” about the death of a radical pope.

We cannot find much record of the loft at 115 Christopher Street outside of Camicia’s memoir, though the address was long a queer haven: the storefront downstairs was at the time of these shows inhabited by Duff’s, a queer-friendly Italian restaurant; in 1980, the gay bar, Christopher’s would open, hosting dinners and drag performances. In 1993, it was followed by The Hangar, a Black gay dive bar, which closed last year.
