The Playwright’s Workshop Club, Inc. Presents Theatre Off-The-Wall Production of Salome

New York: Bastian’s, 1972. 8 1/2 x 14 in. poster, offset printed on white paper stock. Item #10487

Poster for the queer Cuban-born singer, actor, drag performer and Santeria priest’s adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play, performed the year following La Habana’s graduation from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

The only reference we can find to the production is a brief listing in Players Vol. 48-49, which dates it to 1972. This would make this production likely La Habana’s first work upon moving to New York. Aside from the abovementioned directory listing, this production is otherwise unrecorded, and this is the first example of the flyer we’ve seen. This performance also included Wilhelmina Ross, the Black drag queen, performance artist, and member of the Hot Peaches, and Alexis del Lago, the Puerto Rican drag performer and artist. Both were Warhol models, and Ross’ portrait was central to the Ladies and Gentlemen series.

Rare ephemera from the queer Black and Latine performance scene in 1970s New York.

Price: $300.00
