Poster for the June 19, 1983 meeting of the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE), a major teachers union in Mexico founded as an alternative to the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) following harassment, firings, and physical attacks from SNTE leaders on opposition union forces.  

The new organization was primarily composed of women; CNTE has particular strongholds in the poorest parts of the country. The CNTE’s membership was particularly strong in the Indigenous regions of Southern Mexico; Chiapas and Oaxaca in particular. The first CNTE marches were held in 1980 in Mexico City and pushed for salary raises for teachers and new social programs for their students. The CNTE was also active in pushing back against the prevailing eliminationist logic with regard to indigenous languages, leading to policies that favored the preservation of Mayan, Nahuatl, and other indigenous languages.
