Michael Salem’s Boutique

New York: Michael Salem’s Transvestite Boutique, [1970s]. Two leaves. One 11 x 17 in., folded catalog and one 8 ½ x 11 in. folded order form, each folded to 5 ½ x 8 ½ in. Both very good, with a few ink annotations to the order form. Item #10545

Sales catalog and order form for the important New York drag and trans boutique, founded in 1969 and still active today.

Michael Salem’s Boutique was one of the first drag boutiques in New York and sold lingerie, prosthetics, erotica, cosmetics, video, and Michael Salem’s guide, “How to Impersonate a Woman.” It was one a very limited number of places for trans and queer people to explore their identities in these ways, and built a prolific mail-order business that continues to exist today.

The catalog advertises lingerie, “silicone type designed breasts” and artificial nipples, and sex toys. The catalog promotes Michael Salem’s “wicked wigs,” breast pads, stockings, and many more accessories. The order form also allows customers to order other catalogs from Michael Salem, such as “transvestite fiction books,” “information on private clubs, parties, entertainment,” and “transvestite rubber clothing & publications.”

Early catalogs and ephemera from Michael Salem’s Boutique remain quite rare; two example of any catalogs from this important trans boutique found in OCLC as of April 2026.
