Item #10555 Justice For Huey [mailer]

Justice For Huey [mailer]

Oakland: The Committee for Justice for Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party, 1977. Five distinct items. Two documents, one sticker, and two envelopes; all offset. From 1¼ x 4⅛ in. to 9 x 6 in. All very good; sticker is discolored on bottom right corner. Item #10555

Small collection of ephemera from the Committee for Justice for Huey P. Newton and the Black Panther Party, including a letter from Black Panther Party chairperson Elaine Brown and one from former chairperson Huey P. Newton; and a Justice For Huey sticker.

The Committee for Justice for Huey was looking to raise funds and advocacy for Huey P. Newton’s 1977 trial for the murder of Kathleen Smith; Newton had just returned from exile in Cuba to face the charges in the United States. The documents claim the trial is political persecution, and cite the findings of the 1976 Church Committee, established by Congress to determine the excesses of the FBI, as evidence for the sanity-destroying efforts against the Black Panther Party in general and Huey P. Newton in particular.
